ACTOR Son of the acclaimed film director John Boorman, Charley’s acting career started as a child first appearing in the film ‘Deliverance’ in 1972. Since then he has appeared in various films including ‘Excalibur’, ‘The Emerald Forest’, ‘Hope and Glory’, ‘Karaoke’, ‘The Serpent’s Kiss’ and ‘The Bunker’. It was on the set of ‘The Serpent’s Kiss’ that he met friend and fellow motorcycle enthusiast Ewan McGregor, a relationship that sparked a series of adventures.
BESTSELLING AUTHOR Charley has penned 6 bestselling books about his amazing adventures – they are Long Way Round (2004 - With Ewan McGregor), Race to Dakar (2006), Long Way Down (2007 - With Ewan McGregor), By Any Means (2008), Right to the Edge: Sydney to Tokyo By Any Means (2009) and Extreme Frontiers: Racing Across Canada from Newfoundland to the Rockies (2012).
Charley is now one of the faces of modern TV adventuring having successfully produced adventure travel documentaries for the BBC, SKY, Channel Five and the National Geographic Channel since 2004. His first big adventure was the iconic award winning series Long Way Round (2004) biking overland from London to New York via Europe and Asia alongside Ewan McGregor. Charley returned to the saddle with Ewan in 2007 for the Long Way Down, which saw the duo travel from John O’Groats to Cape Town. Ongoing adventures include the Dakar rally,travelling solo from Ireland to Australia using any method of transport he could find (and again from Sydney to Tokyo) and a 10,300 mile journey across Canada
Charley has been described by the motorcycle news journalist, himself a circuit racer, as a ‘natural race rider’. Growing up with bikes in Ireland, racing, rallying, and adventure travel have fused bikes into the very fabric of Charley Boorman
Charley has been an ambassador for Unicef alongside Ewan McGregor for many years now, and describes UNICEF as “a fantastic bunch of people with hearts and capability absolutely in the right place”.Charley, who is very publically dyslexic himself, is the president of Dyslexia Action and is always pushing to use any influence to help motivate individuals who are dyslexic. Charley is furthermore a fervent supporter of Help for Heroes, visiting the troops in Afghanistan for Christmas in 2009.Having had testicular cancer in 2010, Charley is an ambassador for Movember is very keen to increase awareness of men’s health.
Born in London in 1966, Charley grew up in Ireland, LA and the UK, spending much of his childhood riding motorcycles. Husband to Olly with two daughters, Doone and Kinvara, he is very much a family man, and when he is not travelling the world, he can be found at his home in Barnes, London
